Canada Line – Vancouver

A Public-Private Partnership (P3), the $2B Canada Line connects the Vancouver International Airport with downtown Vancouver. Built and managed by SNC Lavalin, the system includes 16 stations over its 19Km double-track route, running fully automated trains manufactured by Hyundai-Rotem. TrakCom designed and built the radio communication system for the project as a subcontractor to Westinghouse Rail Systems.

TrakCom’s contribution to the project included the wayside radio infrastructure with an extensive underground antenna system, and the onboard communications system (OCS) deployed on both the initial 20 two-car trains and recently delivered additional trains.

Canadian Pacific Railway

TrakCom designed and manufactured the core hardware and software elements of CP’s mission-critical Rail Communications System (RCS). From three dispatch centers located in Calgary, Montreal, and Minneapolis, RCS facilitates direct communication between RTC dispatchers and other personnel, with trains and field crews across CP’s rail network. RCS is a TCP/IP-based system with Voice-over-IP (VoIP) connectivity and control enabled through wayside base-stations connected to CP’s ATM fiberoptic transmission network.

Detroit People Mover – Nextel Corp.

The Detroit People Mover is a driverless light rail system operated by the Detroit Transportation Corporation (DTC). As part of a frequency swap agreement between Nextel and DTC, TrakCom developed a new 900MHz communications system to replace the existing 800MHz infrastructure. TrakCom provided both onboard communications control units and fixed radio communications control and dispatch console PC’s for this project. The new system enables full duplex communication through onboard passenger access panels, automated station announcements, hostler access panels to facilitate crew communications, and transfer of vehicle health data over the radio network.

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC)

The third largest urban mass transit system in North America, the TTC operates subway and surface routes that move over 1.5M passengers on a typical workday throughout the city. TrakCom has continued to work with the TTC on mission-critical projects for over 20 years.

  • TrakCom designed, manufactured, and implemented a new Subway Car Radio System (SCRS) that provides communications for the three main TTC subways lines; Bloor-Danforth, Yonge-University-Spadina, and more recently Sheppard. TrakCom continues to provide 3rd level maintenance for the system including periodic field audits.

  • TrakCom designed and implemented a highly reliable, fault tolerant Integrated Communications System (ICS) that handles all telephone, radio, public address (PA), and paging communications for subway/SRT and surface operations. In part, it controls and enhances the Subway Car Radio System (SCRS) previously provided by TrakCom.

Vancouver SkyTrain (TransLink)

North America’s first advanced driverless rapid transit system, SkyTrain is equipped entirely with TrakCom communications systems. TrakCom’s Onboard Communications System (OCS) integrates passenger communications terminals; automated station announcements via the public address system; monitoring of onboard passenger assistance alarms and smoke detectors; a hosteler access panel enabling crew communication and public address; and a data interface enabling the transmission of vehicle health information across the network. OCS equipped trains connect to central control through full duplex radio communication using a high-efficiency proprietary MPT1327 trunked radio protocol developed by TrakCom.

rapidKL Kelana-Jaya Line

Operated by rapidKL, the Kelana-Jaya automated Light Rail Transportation (LRT) system in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia consists of 24 stations served by 35 two-car trains over a 29Km double track line. The Kelana-Jaya LRT is equipped entirely with TrakCom communications systems. TrakCom’s Onboard Communications System (OCS) integrates passenger communications terminals; automated station announcements via the public address system; monitoring of onboard passenger assistance alarms and smoke detectors; a hosteler access panel enabling crew communication and public address; and a data interface enabling the transmission of vehicle health information across the network. OCS equipped trains connect to central control through full duplex radio communication using a high-efficiency proprietary MPT1327 trunked radio protocol developed by TrakCom.

AirTrain JFK

The AirTrain serves all terminals of the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Thirty-two driverless cars run individually across a 14Km dual-guideway serving 10 stations including connections at Howard Beach for the NYC subway, and Jamaica for the Long Island Railroad.

TrakCom designed and manufactured the Onboard Communications System (OCS) and wayside Emergency Radio Interface System (ERIS) used on AirTrain. OCS interfaces to both an existing full-duplex 800MHz EDACS trunked radio system and a half duplex 800MHz digital radio system used by operations and maintenance personnel.
